Original BR 184
Trix Express
Model 1:87 (The decals will be replaced)
It's a Trix Express model. Very
wide flanges, all wheels are isolated.
Pickup shoes for center and outer rail. For a 3 rail digital conversion the
wheels
need to be replaced and a longer center pickup must be installed.
The original Trix DC motor will
be replaced by a Mabuchi motor with a
much better running characteristic.
The Mabuchi motor with flywheel and a smaller gear to
reduce the speed of the loco is installed.
A special mounting bracket to
support the motor in the front.
(Many thanks to Heiko Mehnert for the motor and his support)
The conversion job starts right here
on the truck, the wheels on the left are
replaced by Trix wheels with Märklin flanges, the right side is still Trix Express.
The center
pickup shoe from Märklin need a new handmade mounting plate
Special spacer were needed to
reduce the side play because of the different
flanges from the Märklin wheels. (Thanks to Christoph Flicka with SFA Modellbau)
On this picture you can see the original Trix wheel sets for Märklin rails.
(Thanks to Ton Jongen, Netherlands)
Also from Ton I got the power pickups springs to get rail power from both sides
of the isolated wheel sets.
The modified power pickup assembly.
The special 2mm LED's arrived from Hong Kong. The inner pair are the white
head lights, the outer ones the red tail lights. The holes in the loco body for
the
tail lights were faked, and they needed to be drilled with a 2mm drill bit.
Now the wiring is done. The LED's are connected in series and the load
resistors.
The wires from both sides are soldered to a 3 pin connector.
The female 3 pin connector is wired to the decoder.
Now from the other side.
The head lights are very bright.
And so the red tail lights.

of changing lights.
Will be continued ! Decals! :o)
