Märklin 3102 "Borsig Mallet"
One of my favorite locos.

A customer project:
This loco was not running anymore, most of the gears completely worn out.
After the loco was disassembled, the whole damage became visible.

A lot of parts, a lot of work, but there is hope!

The rear frame with only the drive wheels left in.

Behind the wheels starts the disaster. All gears are badly worn out.

All the gears, intermediate gears and the pins need to be replaced.

Frame and gears after a deep cleaning.

The brush holder plate shows copper particles from the commutator.

Commutator and gear from the 5 pole motor worn on both sides.

Tender after cleaning & rewiring, reconnected the wheel power pickup.

Front drive frame before ...

... and after the cleaning and inspection. Nothing really worn here.

Front drive frame assembled again.

Motor preinstalled, check for clearance inside the body.
Brush plate has to be installed in the right way!

What a difference, the new gear on top.

New intermediate gears and pins installed and lubricated.

New gears and pins between the drive wheels.

Rear drive frame assembled.

Motor installed, ready for the first off track test run.

Both frames are reunited again.

Tender is open again for the installation of the sound decoder.

Installation of a 8 pin NMRA connector to easily disconnect the decoder
and test all the functions of the loco.

Wiring around rear drive frame and the motor.
Notice the up-side-down brush holder position.

A new connection device for the head light and smoke generator is installed.

The new LokSound mfx decoder with speaker in the tender.

The loco on the test stand for the first run. Runs great, like a new one.

Smoke generator installed.

A long test run on my 50 years old layout.

What a Beauty. The "Borsig Mallet" ready to run at the customers layout again.
